Why Apple's privacy claims sounded hollow


More than a year ago, I was watching a video of Tim Cook talk about how privacy is very important to Apple. But hearing it then, something felt off, something like he didn't say it with conviction...

values only mean anything when they’re in conflict

I understood why I had that feeling when I read that from this issue of The Whippet newsletter.

Apple's supporting privacy is not in conflict with anything. It is actally good for their business, making them more money, trapping people into their ecosystem, etc, etc.

Not being able to precisely target audience might hurt small business. Again, this sounds hollow when Facebook says it, because this is not in conflict with Facebook's revenure model, but others like Ben Thompson agree too.
